Somehow I had never seen Brian De Palma’s The Fury (1978) until recently. Here are a few random observations, focussing on its visual wizardry. With lots of split diopters – it’s a De Palma after all – and ‘zoom in cuts’. We’ll start with a rare horizontal split diopter.

That’s indeed Daryll Hannah in this clip en the still below – in her debut. Two more debuts in The Fury:

Split diopters alert!

Continuing with my favourite scene. Fast ‘zoom in cuts’ + rear projections + split diopter + Hermannesque score + dramatic zoom in = wonderful scene:

Two more fast ‘zoom in cuts’ (is there a better technical term for this?) The second one has a split diopter as added bonus.

The last split diopter! Just before… Well…

And oh yeah. It’s illegal to drive through an alley without hitting a garbage can!
